In the course of the European Air TrafficManagement Program (EATMP) from theEuropean Organization for the Safety of AirNavigation, a Safety Policy and a System SafetyAssessment Methodology was published, whichsuggests a unique approach to system safety. Ithas the objectives to increase capacity andenhance safety of the European network of airtraffic control.The company FREQUENTIS, one of the worldleadingsuppliers of voice communicationsystems (VCS) for air traffic control in the fieldof military and civil aviation, largely adopted theapproach suggested by Eurocontrol. Thefollowing paper presents this approach, togetherwith the unique safety management principlesemployed by FREQUENTIS.Additionally, we highlight the achievements ofthe independent safety department withinFREQUENTIS, which has pursued theimplementation of the recommendationsemphatically. Safety consciousness is promotedamong developers and managers alike, by meansof regular internal safety classes. Furthermore, anumber of databases are used to track safetyissues. These include an organization widehazard log. It is an explicit requirement for thebusiness unit managers to minimize the numberof open hazards in their projects and metricshave been defined to quantify the success ofhazard mitigation measures.
