Feasibility study into integrated waste stream solutions for future environmentally sound warship design

The UK Navy has a target of 'environmentally sound warship design'. This means that futurenaval ships will need to be capable of treating or destroying all wates onboard so that the emissions, if any, are considered environmentally benigh or insignificant. This will ensure that warships will be able to operate worldwide without being constrained, or restricted, in their operational activity by future international, national or local environmenttal regulations. To meet this target, equipment and system designs need to be formulated encompassing, in particular, well-developed methods which examine the whole' waste problem' from source to discharge. There are many issues which impact on the decisions of how to assess the waste system solutions with respect to thier installation, operation, integration and ship impact. However it is in the early stages of design where there is a need for methodologies to be developed to look at the waste system as a whole. This paper will describe the benefits of well developed methdologies used in the design stages and the associated benefits of proactive rather than reactive design in this area. The methodology and approach, will be illustrated will examples of recent work from a feasibility study examining integrated waste stream solutions for the Royal Navy (RN). The methodology developed was used to assess a rumber of integrated waste stream designs to assess the suitability of this approach for future warships.
