The studies of phytoplankton variability have been carried out in Gotland Basin (Baltic Sea) in late summer 1997 and 1998 during cyanobacteria bloom. Dynamical spatial maps of Chl a and Phycoerythrin were registered in ONLINE mode by flow-through spectrofluorimeter FLUO-IMAGER M32B. The focus was made to calibration of phytoplankton fluorescence data by pigment concentration. The field studies made confirmed that ON-LINE spectrofluorimetry based on excitation spectra of fluorescence can be effectively used to diagnose the phytoplankton pigments in application to the tasks of bloom detection, analysis of temporal development and spatial distribution of photosynthetic pigments.
