摘要

We provide an explanation for the anomalously low values of liquid tensil strength, F_c, recorded in some experiments involving the reflection of a pressure pulse (as tension) at the free surface of a colum of water, or at the interface between water and a flexible membrane. This explanation involves the reflection of a downward-travelling pulse of tension (as an upward-travelling tension pulse) at the base ot he water column. This results in the establishment of interference due to overlap of the pulses. It is shown that the anomalously low values of F_c may be a consequence of a difference in the velocity of the upward- and downward-travelling pulses when cavitation of the liqud accompanies this pulse overlap.
