This paper reports a CFD modeling study which has been performed for the purpose of planning some basic experiemnts on the interaction between thermal radiation and convective heat transfer. These have application to control of the temperature of the pressure vessel of a gas-cooled nuclear reactor by reducing airflow over its outside surface. The test section to be used in the experiments is shown in Figure 1. It is a vertical plane passage with one wall heated by an arrangement of 24 independent heaters and the opposite one thermally insualted on the outside to give an adiabatic condition. Initially, both walls have highly polished surfaces with an emissivity of 0.15. Later the surfaces will be treated to increase the emisivity. Air at 20 deg C is induced upwards through the passage by a blower at flow rates to give Reynolds numbers from 5000 to 15,000.
