Water-based coatings for paper-based packages are a convenient tool to add value and product differentiation. Barrier properties such as water, grease/oil, moisture vapor, and abrasion resistance, non-skid or anti-slip performance, and release can be tailored to fit various needs in the marketplace to enhance the performance or appearance of a package. These properties are constructed through the selection of the most appropriate raw materials. The proper hot melt adhesive selection, application equipment, and conditions of use in combination with the coating, and the paper substrate are critical variables in the manufacturing process, and can meet almost any need. The lack of attention to any of these details can result in the failure of the final package at the converter, or, even worse, the end user.
