The smoke hazard management system design variables for an atrium include the size and geometry of the atrium, the size, shape, location and capacity of the fans and the size, shape and location of the intake air vents. CFD modelling may be used to demonstrate the impact of each of these design variables and quantify the relationships between them. However, whilst being powerful modelling tools, CFD models are complicated to construct and run. The time and cost component of conducting a CFD analysis may limit the number of scenarios explored. Zone models, on the other hand, are simpler to construct, run and interpret. Not all the design variables can be investigated using zone models but, with the aid of other manual or computerised tools zone models, may be as effective as CFD models. The study described in this paper investigates the use of zone models and CFD models to assess some of the design options. The investigation is based on the fire safety engineering assessment of a hospital atrium.
