Experimental results on the gas-sensing properties of an electrically conductive thiophene oligomer, deposited by the Langmuir Blodgett technique, are presented. Multilayers of a 1:1 mixture (molar ratio) of the derivatised heptathiophene (containing a pendant 1-dodecyl group attached to the central ring) and cadmium arachidate were deposited onto Corning glass for optical characterisation and planar interdigitated microelectrodes for electrical measurements. Dynamic response characteristics of the conductance to different NO concentrations in dry air are described. LB films of heptathiophene have shown a good sensitivity to NO gas at an operating temperature of about 50°C.
