Fast selective and sensitive spectrometers operating in the atmospheric windows between 1 μm and 2 μm are described. Semiconductor distributed feed-back (DFB) diode are used as laser sources. Several detection techniques are compared, ranging from pure linear absorption to shot-noise limited two-tone frequency modulation. Results are reported for various molecules of medical and environmental interest such as CO, CO_2, H_2S, NH_3 and O_2.
