The response of polymer coated surface acoustic wave (SAW) device to relative humidity (RH) adsorption is here examined.The sensitive membrane is a novel polymer, POLY(BIS-TRIBUTHYLPHOSPHINE-Ni-DIETHYNYLBIPHENYL), Ni-DEBP, prepared by catalitic dehydroalogenation reaction of the corresponding Ni(Ⅱ) dichloride and p-diethynyibiphenyl in basic solvents. The polymer is soluble in toluene and in THF (tetrahydrofuran), it is sensitive to water vapour and insoluble in water. The Ni-DEBP based SAW sensor shows fast and reversible responses at RH values that can not be detected by the use of a commercial humidity sensor.
