Waterhammers in piping systems can occur for a variety of operating, design, and maintenance reasons. Many times the systems design and operation can lead to unknown or unexpected conditions that may allow a waterhammer to occur. The susceptibility of a design and the operating modes that will cause a waterhammer may not be sufficiently understood to allow the condition to be recognized and prevented. This panel will describe a variety of waterhammers, the geometric and operating conditions that can cause them, and steps that can be taken to prevent their occurrence. The panel will also discuss methods that can be used to either quickly assess the magnitude of a waterhammer or to calculate the behavior with sufficient accuracy to appropriately design a system to withstand the effects of a waterhammer.
