Principles of tissue engineering governing osteogenic devices

The essential characteristics of appliances intended to generate controlled, programmable osteogenesis are dictated by the disparate demands placed upon them by wound circumstances, by the cells occupying them and by the surgeons who implant them. This paper illustrates certain principles of design and engineering for these devices by describing metal and ceramic constructs customized for application to the interbody spinal fusion wound model. Other design principles are elucidated by joining conventional plastic surgery procedures with three dimensional, bioresorbable devices to advance processes of osteogenesis.
