Earthquake induced element forces are in general vector systems, whose componentsvary in time, independently one from another. Consequently the components of the same responsevector reach their maximum value at a different time over the interval of structure’s vibration. R/Ccross sections subjected to combinations of two or more element forces need to be sized and detailedfor the “most unfavorable” one. A number of methods for determining the most unfavorablecombinations of simultaneous element forces are presented in this paper. Analytical results fromthe application of these methods to a six-story building are compared.
