The paper presents the seismic microzonation of Bucharest, Romania, based on 24triaxial/biaxial records during the 1977 (moment magnitude M-W =7.5), the 1986 (M-W =7.2) and the1990 (M-W =7.0) Vrancea earthquakes. The frequency content of the Bucharest records is describedby the control period of response spectra T-C = 2π EPV/EPA. The effective peak acceleration EPAand effective peak velocity EPV were defined using definitions invariant to the frequency bandwidthof the ground motions. The effect of both magnitude and soil condition on the recorded motionsis studied. The long predominant period of soil vibration in Bucharest is analyzed. Zonationmaps for T-C and EPA are presented using Geographical Information System (GIS) technology.
