We report on a digital holographic sensor for marine particulates. This Remote Optical Vision Enhancer(ROVE) images individual particles over a deep depth-of-field (>25cm) with a resolution of 5 microns. ROVE uses fiber optics to illuminate the sample volume, keeping hte laser and most electronics on the surface. A collimated beam passes through the water column and onto a lensless CCD array. Some light is diffracted by particulates and forms the object beam; the undeflected remainder constitutes the reference beam. The two combine at the CCD array and form an in-line hologram. The digitized hologram is numerically reconstructed; ROVE eliminates many of the problems traditionally associated with holography.
