The focus of environmental protection is now on shifting from documentation of pollutant patterns, identification of remediation technology, to a concern with pollution prevention. This paper presents an optimization approach to tolerance design, coped with the environmentally benign concept. Tightening system's variations can lead to a better customer satisfaction but it may result in a higher cost to the manufacturer. On the other hand, larger tolerance limits or larger allowable variations will adversely affect quality. Environmental consideration makes it even more complicated to conduct tolerance design. To facilitate the tasks, we can establish a generic optimization model. The control variables are the tolerance levels associated with the design parameters. Our goal in design is to minimize the total societal loss that also includes a loss to the environment, by selecting the best level settings of the tolerance limits.
