For certain regional scale problems in the Netherlands, there is the need to consider both ground and surface water aspects. Becuse of the dynamic interaction of both water systems, simulation with an available MODFLOW (MacDonald and Harbough, 1988) model appeared on to be sufficient. It was necessary to integrate MODFLOW with a surface water model on a time step base. Instead of developing a new model, two existing models were combined: MODFLOW and DUFLOW. The resulting coupled model is called MODFLOW. DUFLOW is a one-dimensional surface water model for the calculation of non-steady flow and water quality in a branch of canals (DUFLOW, 1995). DUFLOW can also simulate streams that become dry and simulate certain structures, for example weirs, pumps and culverts.
