Ultralife Batteries, Inc. has developed high capacity prismatic lithium manganese dioxide cells with excellent rate performance to -20°C. High surface area, high-density cathodes have enabled significant increases in interfacial area per unit volume, thereby minimizing transfer resistance at the positive electrode. Ultralife Batteries has also investigated novel electrolyte systems for low temperature operation. As a result of these developments, Ultralife is now able to produce a safe 5590 battery with 13-14 Ah capacity at a constant 2A current drain, translating to an energy density of >600 Whl~(-1). At -20°C more than 80% of the available room temperature capacity can be attained at the 2A rate.
