The bane of the fluid power engineers existence are their inability to accurately predict penumatic actuator response times operatign under two different loads and subjected to two distinct pressures. This is unlike their counterparts in the hydraulics and electrical field where this and other essential information is computable. However, today there is a procedure that can essentially answer all of the analogous pneumatic questions. This paper is devoted to it, emphasizing the profound role of the commonplace conductor which is central to the technique and employed with every compressed air and vacuum appliance. It is not as exciting as sharing with one's peers the development of a new material or energy source. But, it will dispel a few myths. Namely, the proper sizing and selection of this conveyor of air molecules can be a significant ingredient in reducing manufacturing costs. The value for making the correct choice of conductors in order to reduce energy usage have already been demonstrated in the hydraulics, HVAC (heating, ventilating and air conditioning), electrical etc. disciplines. Why not in pneumatics? Due to ignorance, pneumatics has traditionally been taken for granted, neglected or relegated to irrelevancy. As a result productivity, energy consumption and capital expenditure proposals suffer, causing many otherwise worthwhile projects to be canceled. That need no longer be the case. Hopefully, this publication will aid in establishing the importance of incorporating the ordinary compressed air conductor in pneumatic calculations. Which should then elevate it to the same vital position that it occupies in the hydraulics, HVAC or electrical areas.
