The present paper describes the implementation of the DYNA 3D FE code in the analysis of the dynamic axial collapse of thin-walled steel cylindrical tubes. Two distinct deformation modes observed during the loading of such components and classified as "concertina" and "diamond" types of failure are simulated and analysed by this code and the predicted numerical results are compared with actual experimental data obtained from drop-hammer tests on similar specimens, showing a very good agreement.
