The crucial characteristics required for the ceramic filter material for applications in advanced fossil energy power generation, i.e., PFBC and IGCC are thermal shock resistance and structural stability at high temperature, high steam pressure condition. Among various candidates, the direct bonded Cordierite currently used in the Advanced Ceramic Tube Filter of Asahi Glass Co (AGC) will be one of the best materials for this purpose. Through the enormous experiences of ACTF units in various PFBC pilot plants, however, the current material could not sufficiently cope with possible boiler upset which is assumed to be inevitable in PFBC, even if some counter measures to moderate temperature excursion are taken.
