The performance of cationic starches in highly closed mills using recycled fibers is often hampered by high concentrations of anionic substances (a.k.a. "interfering substances"). The objective of the research to be reported here is to improve the retention of cationic starch by the fiber fraction of an OCC furnish used in the production of high strength paperboard. Experiments have been carried out to investigate the interaction between cationic starch and various furnish fractions (fibers, fines, white water, dissolved solids) under a variety of conditions. For each fraction, the starch adsorption rate and equilibrium retention levels are being determined as a function of starch addition level, starch charge ensity, and consistency. It is expected that these studies will provide data from which a starch addition strategy can be derived.
