The potential of using advanced geographic information system (GIS) technology in transportation is illustrated in the context of the Metro Development Study (MDS). Data management issues related to the conceptual design of the MDS geographical data base and the representation of public transport routes are discussed. A geocoding application serving the needs of the transportation model is described. Examples of data display (thematic maps) and data manipulation(map overays) are given, and finding of spatial data analysis are presented. The overview of GIS-based transportation applications within MDS illustrates the advantages of integrating both systems.
