Inflammation in the lung is associated with tissue swellign and increased tissue water content that can lead to altered lung mechanics and compromised lung function. Chronic lung inflammation can generate irreversible structural changes in the lung, due to focal stimulation of myofibroblast proliferation and collagen synthesis (fibrosis). Such changes are key elements of the interstitial lung diseases, of which there are more than 200 known environmental causes,a nd of chronic inflammatory airway diseases such as asthma. The process of remodelling in fibrotic lung disease begins with an inflammatory exudate, which is consolidated with the synthesis of "provisional matrix", that is finally replaced by collagenous ("fibrotic") matrix.
