This paper aim is to describe the development of high friction composition type brake shoes at Carajas Railway. The main objectives to be reached with this development were: Substitute the asbestos composition type brake shoes for non asbestos type and obtain a performance index to each material experimented in order to have a cost/benefit evaluation.
