The kinetics of mesophase formation from a coal tar pitch and from a mixture of pitch with a FeCl_3, graphite intercalation compound (GIC) have been studied at temperatures between 380°C - 440°C. Preliminary studies on mesophase formation from a mixture of coal tar pitch with MoCl_5 GIC have also been performed. The addition of a GIC accelerates the mesophase formation and the Lewis acids initiate the reactions leading mesophase formation at a lower temperature.
