Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) would not play the important role it plays these days, if good experience-based acceptance criteria for (weld) defects would not exist. Such criteria are often based on Good Workmanship considerations. The use of such criteria over the years in combination with operational experience has led to well-established routine NDT practice all over the world.
