The EI Portal Road, also known as the All-Year highway," currently handles a quarter of all traffic into Yosemite National park and is often the only access of Yosemite Valley during the winter months. The EI Poltal road, a segment of state Route 140 within Yosemite National Park, is a 7.5 mile section of highway that winds through the s scenic Merced River Gorde. This 70-year-old road has suffered from decades of eroshion, increased traffic, and the effects of numberous floods, mudslides, and rockslides. Severe flooding in January 1997 accelerated this deterioration and prompted the current reconstruction of this section of highway.
