The 2160 m long Tsing Ma Bridge, which will be the longest suspension bridge in the world that carries both highway and railway traffic on its completion, is part of the Lantau Fixed Crossing providing access to the future Chek Lap Kok Airport. The bridge deck units of Tsing Ma Bridge were assembled in Shatian, China before they were transported to the site in Hong Kong for erection. As the structural form of Tsing Ma Bridge is quite complex, it is worthwhile to conduct tests on selected structural components to determine their structural characteristics. Such information would be useful for the future structural health monitoring system for the completed bridge and for the validation of the design assumptions. A series of tests were therefore conducted on selected bridge deck modules before they were shipped to Hong Kong. This paper describes the dynamic tests conducted by the Department of Civil and Structural Engineering, the University of Hong Kong on the module comprising Units 58 and 59 of the bridge deck. Spectral analyses of the field data were carried out to obtain the vibration characteristics, namely the natural frequencies and corresponding mode shapes, and they were compared to predictions from finite element analysis.
