Inspection, Testing and Repair/Replace (ITR) policies as Part of Reliability certification for Programmable Electronic (PE) Systems

During the last decade, a great emphasis has been placed on the improved management of technological risks. Improvement has occurred in many indusrtial environments using safety guidelines and performance based criteria which can be used to evaluate the benefits of alternative risk management solutions. These alternative risk management solutions often incorporate sophisticated safety systems, such as a Programmable Electronic (PE) system, that perform complicated and critical safety functions. As a result, a great emphasis has been placed on the improved performance of these systems and the development of industry specific application guidelines that promote the systematic evaluation and certification of their reliability [1,2]. This "third party" certification is governed by acceptable performance measures (reliability) addressing the entire life cycle of the system.
