63 Control of gas contaminants in air steams through biofiltration

Styrene is used in large quantities by the chemical industry, primarily as a starting material for the manufacturing of synthetic polymerssuch as polystyrene, plastics, rubber, resins, and insulators. Also, it is a common cross-linking agent in glass fiber-reinforced, unsaturated polyerster resins employed in construction materials and for the production of boats. In 1992, 7x10~6 kg of styrene were discharged to the atmosphere in the United States~.1 Although some of the industriallyy produced st5yrene is emitted to the environment through the soil and water, most of the releases are to the atmosphere~2. Within the tennessee Valley Region, in 1992, 1.0 x 10~6 kg of styrene were emitted either as a fugitive or stack gas by manufacturing industries making the contaminant the second largest toxic Release Inventory (TRI) classified carcinogen releaed in the area.~1
