BIofiltration is an emerging biological treatment technology for the removal of airborne VOCs from industrial process waste streams. Removal of air-phase VOCs by biofiltration is accomplished by contacting a process airstream with an active microbial biofilm attached to a solid phase packing. VOCs that partition into the biofilm are aerobically oxidized to the endproducts of water, carbon dioxide and salts. Biofiltration is an environmentally sound treatment process, because it eliminates the emission of VOCs to the atmosphere and could replace capital and energy intensive combustion processes currently employed by industry. A major advantage to industry in the use of biofilters is the ability to recirculate process air to allow for closed loop operations with essentially zero contaminant discharge to the atmosphere.
