Long term durability studies have been carried out at BRE enabling comparisons to be made of the performances of different concretes in marine environments. Concretes containing portland cements alone and blended with ground granulated blast-furnace slag have been stored in spray, tidal and full immersion zones at the BRE marine exposure site at Shoeburyness on the estuary of the River Thames. Chloride ion penetration data were determined by drilling into concrete speciments in incremental depths of 5 mm, down to 30-35 mm, collecting the powder samples and analysing for chloride.
