Uniformly textured coatings, with a "soft feel" effect, can be achieved by using ultrafine polyamide powders in high solids waterborne polyurethane lacquers applied on rubber and plastics. 50 to 60 percent solids systems were optimized and applied on polycarbonate substrates. Coatings were cured and dried at a temperature of 80 deg C. The use of ultra-fine polyamide powders, with tightly controlled particle shape and particle size distribution, allowed our laboratory to achieve repeatable coatings, exhibiting superior abrasion resistance and low rubber heel marking. Surface roughness, scratch resistance/pencil hardness and gloss were also tested on each soft feel coating.
