Simulations of flow over a flexible cable: responses and flow structures

We present results from an ongoing investigation of flow over a flexible cable. In particular, we examine the responses of a flexible cable to various initial conditions. Two sets of initial conditions are studied. In the first set, the cable initial conditions are standing waves of different wavelengths. In the second set, the cable initial conditions are traveling waves of different wavelengths. We first consider the case where the cable is constrained to move only in the cross-stream direction. Then we consider the case where the cable is free to move in both the streamwise and cross-stream directions. The cable motion and fluid forces on the cable, as well as the resulting wake structures are examined. The simulation results show very different qualitative and quantitative behavior between the standing wave response and traveling wave response.
