Substation fire protection features

This paper describes Commonwealth Edison's (ComEd) approch to substation fire protection. Substation fires can have a majhor operational, financial, as well as political impact on a utility. The overall Company philosophy encompassesboth active and passive fire protection features to provide prompt detection, notification, adn confinement of fire an dits by-products. Conservatively designed smoke detection, notification, and confinement of fire and its by-products. Conservatively designed smoke detection systems and floor and wall penetration seals form the backbone of this strategy. The Company has impelmented a program to iinstall these features in new and existing substations. Thus far these measures have been successful in mitigating the consequences of substation fires.
