We are evolving from a world where only the computer literate navigate the Internet to a world where most researchers need and want Internet access. Expanding access is dependent on developing user interfaces that are easy to learn and use. It also depends heavily on presenting information in a way that is easy to understand. The implementation of client/server searching systems based on a standard protocol and a single network has made searching networked databases as easy as searching one's own library catalog. New services in locating, selecting and searching databases will rapidly expand the quantity and quality of resources available to researchers worldwide.It is a well-known fact that widespread and timely access to information spurs innovation. The process of creating a virtual library unifying the major research centers in the world is clearly making information more accessible. We are just beginning to harvest the fruits of these endeavors.
