Development of Lightweight and High Efficiency Swing Type Compressor using New Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor

In recent years, the energy saving of air conditioning business is an important issues from the point of global environmental protection. The compressor which is the heart of air conditioner should be light in weight and the performance at part load operation should be higher to reduce annual power consumption. To achieve the target, we have developed a new lightweight and high efficiency swing type compressor for 6HP Air Conditioner. The new compressor is based on a conventional swing type compressor, which has been used in various air conditioners, with some improved technologies. For instance, the size of the compressor is decreased by using new small Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (IPMSM) which is the main parts of deciding the dimension of compressor. The flux of the motor is increase by optimizing the magnetic arrangements. The efficiency of the compressor is increased by optimizing the motor windings and by using highly efficient permanent magnet. As a result, it was possible to develop a compressor with capacity of 6HP without changing the outer dimension of the 3HP compressor. The weight of the compressor has decreased by 42% and the annual power consumption has been decreased by 5.7% compared to conventional model. This paper describes details about the new developments of the compressor including the motor characteristics and other key features related to performance improvements of the compressor.
