Over the years, polyurethane systems have been used to a growing extent in a number of industrial application fields. This success comes from their outstanding properties, such as high solvent and mechanical resistance, very good adhesion onto various substrates, fast film formation and excellent weathering resistance, which make them being ideal candidates for high demanding and high performance coating applications. Market trends in the coating industries have been to move from solvent-based technologies to waterborne in order to meet new and stronger regulations on VOC reduction, but also to satisfy customers' expectations for safer and more environmentally friendly products. 2K waterborne PU actually represent a very attractive technology which combines (ultra) low VOC emissions together with easy mixing and application (comparable to conventional solvent borne systems) and high film performances. These characteristics make 2K WB PU particularly suitable for car refinish clearcoat applications, although solvent-borne systems still highly dominate this market. This paper aims to investigate the properties and highlight the benefits of 2K waterborne polyurethane clearcoats comparatively to 2K and 1K solvent borne systems conventionally used in the automotive industry.
