A NEW MULTI-FUNCTIONAL ADDITIVE FOR THE ENHANCEMENT OF APPLICATION PROPERTIES, PROMOTION OF COALESCENCE AND DEVELOPMENT OF FREEZE-THAW STABILITY IN LATEX COATINGS

Few additives accomplish as much as ethylene glycol or propylene glycol in latex coating formulations. When added to waterborne paints and coatings these can improve resistance to freeze-thaw cycling, enhance application properties and aid in the coalescence of latex particles. Current VOC restrictions have been addressed through the replacement or elimination of coalescents and other raw materials. These glycols are 100% volatile according to the ASTM D2369 test method and the ever-declining VOC ceilings have forced formulators to reduce or completely remove these glycols, sacrificing critical performance properties. XP3206 is a new additive for waterborne paints and coatings that can aid in the restoration of some of these properties with a minimal affect on formulary VOC. The ability of the XP3206 to promote coalescence, enhance application properties and extend the freeze-thaw stability of latex coatings will be demonstrated in both published formulations and in commercially available paints. Its effect on gloss, blocking resistance and scrub resistance will also be presented.
