Some of the salient results of parallel electron energy loss (PEELS) studies of the detection, distribution and quantification of carbon in various steels are presented. The feasibility of deecting C in ultra low carbon alloy steels containin gas little as 0.03wtpercent C by PEELS is demonstrated followed by examples of electron energy loss images showing C partitioning between retained austenite and ferrite or martensite. In addition, an example of C and Mo segregation to ferrite: martensite interfaces during diffusional austenite decomposition in a Fe-C-Mo steel is presented.
