By the early 1980s telecommunications requirements had begun to demand a new set of services.At the same time,technology developments reached a stage that more costeffective telecommunications networks could be set up to meet these new demands.As a telecommunications system operator INTELSAT has responded to these changes.After an introduction on the evolution of INTELSAT services this paper describes and outlines their applications.These services range from public international telephony to business services and from television services for either rebroadcasting or community reception,to domestic services.INTELSAT services provide high quality transmission for voice,data,electronic funds transfer,teleconferencing,remote printing,high-speed facsimile,telex,electronic mail,video and cable restoration application,and they are supported by FM/FDMA,SPADE,SCPC,IBS,INTELNET,IDR and TDMA networks.The two main characteristics of the new INTELSAT Services are digitalization and costeffectiveness.An example of ISDN capability is outlined by describing through a computer simulation program the TDMA network architecture.Flexible and cost-effective satellite networks using teleports and customer premises VSAT configurations are highlighted;cost and network utilization trade offs are assessed.
