ON AUTO-CONFIGURABLE NETWORK DEVICES

The Internet protocol is widely used in communication between devices of different manufacturers. Ease of use is a key requirement for a wide deployment of small IP devices like hand-held computers and IP-phones. This paper outlines an auto-configuration infrastructure that allows an IPv6 device to obtain a valid IP address in the subnet where the device resides, find the machines that provide standard services in an arbitrary internetworking environment, and dynamically configure end-user applications. This research presents a novel approach for both contacting mobile devices around the world and automatically configuring network services. Our proposal does not require changes in the end-user applications or deployment of new communication protocols, nor does it need wide availability to be useful.
