High degrees of urbanization and the concentration of industrial and mining sites have led to a strong risk of heavy-metal contamination in the environment. Monitoring of the industrial and mining area has become an essential facet in the assessment and control of anthropogenic impacts on urban ecosystem. A geochemical baseline for an element refers to its natural variations in concentration in the surficial environment (Salminen and Tarvainen, 1997). Environmental baselines are required in order to document the present state of surface environment and to provide a datum against which any changes can be measured (Darnley, 1997). Baseline concentrations of elements depend on geological background, sample material collected, grain size and extraction method (Salminen and Tarvainen, 1997; Salminen and Gregorauskiene, 2000; Miko et al., 1999; Selinus and Esbensen, 1995).
