This paper begins by giving a summary of the capabilities of different types of simulation packages for switch mode power supplies (SMPS). Then the paper describes how MATLAB provides interesting capabilities for SMPS simulation. Specifically, by utilizing the Simulink toolbox within MATLAB, it is possible to create a circuit emulator where the user is only required to draw a circuit. The time-varying switching circuit is then simulated. The averaged model of the circuit can be automatically derived. Small signal transfer functions can be explicitly obtained by utilizing the symbolic Maple kernel within MATLAB. This kernel also has the capabilities of automated linearization of the nonlinear averaged equations. Bode plots of performance transfer functions are easily obtained.
