When T.Y.Lin proposed his load-balancing concept there were at the time significant differences in the practice of prestressed concrete design, when compared with thepresent. Designs were base (mainly) on working stress rather than strength and partially prstressed concrete was ont in general use. The paper suggests that more comprehensive deisng methos, which take account of advances in design requirements and construction technology since 1962, may be more appropriate. In these methods load-balancing techniques certainly have a place, be it is a less prominent one. A unified design and analysis system is proposed, capable of rapid iteration through the use of spreadsheets.
