FTIR: fundamentals and applications in the analysis of dilute vehicle exhaust

Abstract: FTIR spectroscopy has been shown to be a valuable toolin the analysis of complex gas phase mixtures, such adilute vehicle exhaust. Regulated and non-regulatedvehicle emissions have been routinely sampled andanalyzed using prototype instrumentation developed inthis laboratory, and in several other laboratories overthe last decade. More recently, commercial versions ofthese FTIR analyzers have become available throughseveral manufacturers. This paper reviews the dataacquisition and processing techniques utilized by theFTIR analyzer developed in this laboratory. Thestatistical detection limits for 22 of the componentsanalyzed by the system are presented. In addition, thelinearity of the carbon monoxide (CO) analysis isdemonstrated over several orders of magnitude.Experiments designed to study the effects ofenvironmental parameters on the accuracy and thesensitivity of the system are also described.!
