Results are presented from image analysis carried out on the microstructures observed in forged Titanium and Nickel alloys. Quantitative metallographic methods for determining grain size distributions are discussed together with the techniques used to determine the development of the alpha spherodisation process in the hot working of titanium alpha-beta alloys. Forged parts, specifically designed for the validation of microstructural models, have been manufactured in Inconel alloy 718 and the microstructures obtained have been characterised in terms of the grain size and the volume fraction of recrystallised grains. The results from both the titanium and nickel alloy studies are compared with predictions from finite element based forging models. The quantification of the errors associated with both the measurements and the modelling is discussed.
