The fibers in injection molded FRP provide the material's strength and stiffness; however, they also suppy many of the problems. Preferential orientation of fibers during molding can reduce strength and stiffness below the expected values in critical directions, or induce warpage in thin walled sections. Firms involved in the manufacture of short fiber reinforced injection molded products typically make extensive use of computer aided engineering packages to optimize product performance and determine a suitable manufacturing approach. However, different programs have different strengths, and the structural module of flow analysis packages is often 'analysis lite'; a basic package with many essential features missing. This paper describes 'FLOWMOST,' FLOW MO dified ST ructure, an analysis system we have developed that provides an interface between flow modeling and structural analysis, allowing the effects of anisotropy in mechanical properties due to fiber orientation to be examined using a 'full featured' finite element code.
