The paper identifies the differences between the private sector model of management and the public sector model and argues that these differences have important implications for the key concepts of strategic management. It suggests that there is a need for the adaptation of the "content" models to take account of the more complex textures of value, environment, resources and/or competences present in engineering management in military units. Finally, the paper concludes that the private/public context should not be regarded as a dichotomy, but rather as a continuum from "pure private" to pure public, and even within military engineering units there will be variations based on the tasks. Therefore, it is the degree of "Publicness" that matters in customising strategic management ideas.
